Speaker: Ernie Klassen, Member of Parliament for South Surrey–White Rock
Ernie Klassen spoke about several issues affecting South Surrey and White Rock, beginning with the growing needs of seniors. More than one in four residents in the riding are over 65, while seniors make up approximately 40% of White Rock’s population. He discussed his work with the National Seniors Caucus and a recent seniors roundtable held at an Amica residence, where participants raised concerns about the rising cost of living, access to support services, food insecurity and seniors experiencing housing instability.
Ernie also highlighted the federal government’s $25 million commitment toward reconstruction of the White Rock Pier, noting that the project received full federal funding rather than the more typical cost-sharing arrangement. He spoke about establishing the first South Surrey–White Rock Youth Council and youth summit, where students discussed issues including social media, artificial intelligence and mental health.
On human rights, Ernie reflected on attending a conference in Amsterdam connected with World Pride in his role as co-chair of the Parliamentary Pride Caucus. He spoke about the serious risks LGBTQ+ people continue to face in many countries around the world.
Ernie also shared a personal highlight from the Canadian Special Olympics in Medicine Hat, where his son earned two silver medals and one bronze. He concluded by inviting members to his free community barbecue on August 29, which is expected to attract approximately 1,000 people.
Club Announcements
New e-transfer addresses: The club has established a new treasurer email at clubtreasurer@whiterockrotary.org, along with a separate email address for charitytreasurer@whiterockrotary.org.
Surrey White Rock Board of Trade: Members are invited to a networking event at Milestones South Point on August 27. Rotary members receive the member rate of $30, compared with the regular $60 fee.
Foundation Dinner: Members are asked to save the date for the annual Foundation Dinner on November 7.
Miss Vicky Driver Needed: A driver is needed for the club’s 1931 Model A Ford, Miss Vicky, for a road trip to Calgary and Edmonton from October 16–26. A test drive can be arranged for anyone interested.
Membership Update: Three prospective members are currently moving through the membership process. David was scheduled for an interview following the meeting, while Ron has already completed his interview.
Newcomers Evening: An upcoming potluck evening will be held at the amenities club at George and Russell. Members were encouraged to photograph and share the promotional poster.
Rotary World Health: More than 480 containers of medical and humanitarian supplies have now been shipped to over 65 countries. Club members Bob Lindsey, who serves as a truck driver, and Joan McAllister, who serves as secretary, were recognized for their contributions.

SOURCES is inviting Rotary members to attend its Volunteer Appreciation BBQ in recognition of volunteers and their dedication.

Ongoing Fundraisers
Annual Book Sale: Preparations are entering the final stage, with table setup beginning one week from the meeting. Because the sale is being held in a school gym with a hardwood floor, pallet jacks cannot be used. Members are asked to provide two-wheel dollies, which can be dropped off at the school on Wednesday between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. or brought to Tuesday’s meeting.
The venue does not provide chairs, so members are also asked to bring chairs where possible. Several promotion and signage volunteer positions remain open, and approximately 40–50 lawn signs still need to be placed in high-visibility locations. Six flyer distribution routes also remain available, and electronic promotional materials can be shared through social media.
Foundry 50/50 Draw: The 50/50 draw continues to raise funds for the Foundry. Two volunteer shifts remain open: August 29 from 4:00–6:00 p.m. and August 31 from 1:00–4:00 p.m. Members interested in helping are asked to contact Irene.
